As Forrest Gump’s mother said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” And we’ve all seen people do some pretty stupid things in our lifetime.
But new research shows we need to adjust that saying to, “Stupid is as stupid eats.”
That’s right, readers! Studies show that we’ve been sugar-jacked by the industry into dumbing ourselves down with hidden sugars in the foods we eat. But we can’t blame them. We’re responsible for our own stupidity.
And unknowingly, we may be responsible for our children’s stupidity too.
So put down that donut, leave the sugar out of your coffee and scrape the jelly off your toast, because evidence is piling up implicating sugar as a stupidity culprit. As stupid as it may sound, “stupid is as stupid eats!”
Proof that We’ve Been Sugar-Jacked
Let’s start with the sugar-jack facts. In 1822, people ate, on average, the amount of added sugar that’s in one 12 ounce serving of soda every five days. Today we eat that same amount of sugar every seven hours.

And the latest science shows eating so much sugar makes us stupid.
An in-depth study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, followed 3,966 children from the age of three until they were eight and a half years old, carefully watching their eating habits.
The researchers essentially compared two groups of children; those who ate “processed” diets consisting of high sugar and fat content and those who ate “health-conscious” diets of salad, rice, pasta, fish and fruit.
Then, at eight and half years of age these kids were given IQ tests.
And guess what? Kids on the “processed” diet had lower IQs and kids on a “health-conscious” diet had higher IQs. It was that clear and simple. “Yeah OK, but…” you might say, “They’re talking about growing children.
“There’s no way sugar can possibly make grown-ups stupid.” Wanna bet?
Stupid is as Stupid Eats – Adult Version
Another research study, published in the Journal of Physiology, took a look at how adult rats were affected by high fructose corn syrup (sugar).
The long and the short of it found that rats fed a high sugar diet couldn’t find their way through a maze they had previously been trained to navigate. But rats on a healthy diet had no problem navigating the maze again.
Another article in the Journal of Physiology, “Sugar Highs and Lows,” showed the impact of diet on cognitive function. The authors clearly link sugar consumption to the decline in mental abilities as people age.
They went on to say these risk factors are modifiable by following healthy eating habits, which are “protective against age-related cognitive decline.”
In other words, you can do something about it, IF you act now.
So, don’t be stupid! Cut added sugar out of your diet and don’t let your kids have any either. Your new motto is “Stupid is as stupid eats!” And your new life-style choice is to eat healthy smart foods for a smart healthy future.
