How are your hunting and gathering skills? It’s an important question for your survival today.
Because when you shop at your local store, or any grocery for that matter, you’re still hunting and gathering – just like your ancestors.
And here’s the really scary part. Even though there are no mammoths or saber tooth tigers around, hunting and gathering is still a risky business.
So what can possibly attack you in the wilds of the aisles?
Even if you know what’s best for you to eat, while braving grocery store aisles you’re constantly distracted by succulent temptations and confusing information – making it hard for you to protect your own best interest.
And you’re not just attacked while out shopping for food; you’re bombarded all day long from advertising to zealous well-meaning friends and family!
Hunting and Gathering in Modern Times
Here’s something for us to consider. “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” Just stop and think about the evidence for that.
Our population is gaining weight. And with every new diet plan promising permanent weight loss, we continue to gain. So nothing’s changed.
Or how about this one; Degenerative disease has been on the rise for years. And even though so called “health care” has “advanced” over those many years, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases are still on the increase. (Maybe that’s why they call it “practicing” medicine!)
And just think how “modern” we’ve become compared to our ancestors.
We tossed off our animal skins for imitation furs and synthetic fibers; and can chase down a sirloin steak faster than tracking a whole mastodon.
But in spite of all our advances, we still need to hunt and gather for our food – only we use a shopping cart instead of a spear and woven basket.
So grocery shopping is just a modern version of hunting and gathering.
Hunting and Gathering Risk Management
Now think about this. Your survival still depends on your hunting and gathering skills – just as much as it did for your early ancestors; and being healthy is based on you making the right risk management decisions.
Should you track down the herd or eke out a meager existence farming some rocky soil? Should you eat healthy wholesome food or indulge in a Big Mac and French-fries? Every choice you make determines your future, whether it’s long or short, healthy or painful, happy or depressing.
Of course, the results of your modern risk management decisions don’t generally show up as fast as they did for your cave dwelling ancestors.
After all, they could have been trampled to death hunting a giant mastodon and that seldom happens while buying a steak at the supermarket.
And since our risk management decisions show up slowly over time, we allow ourselves to get tempted, distracted and caught off guard.
But it’s absolutely clear that the food and lifestyle choices you make today determine your health in the future – whether or not you get the flu this year or heart disease, diabetes or cancer 10 to 20 years from now.
So next time you go shopping at the grocery, think of yourself as a skillful hunter-gatherer. And remember that your life depends on your choices just as much as it did for your great, great, great (multiplied many times over) grandparents (the ones in animal skins using bone tools).
Now back to the first question; how are your hunting and gathering survival skills? What do you find tempts, distracts and catches you off guard?
